Meta Product Catalogue for Shopify: How to Set It Up Right for Advantage+ (2026)

8 min read · Published 17 July 2026

In short: Your Meta product catalogue is built straight from your Shopify product data, and it is the foundation every Meta ad runs on. Connect your store with the Facebook & Instagram by Meta sales channel and your products sync to the catalogue automatically, but Meta will only show the ones that are eligible and complete: physical, paid products, with a return policy set, a Google product category assigned, clean images, and the right fields filled in. Get the catalogue right and Meta’s Advantage+ sales campaigns and catalogue ads have good, approved products to work with. Get it wrong and products are quietly rejected before a single ad runs.

If you sell physical products on Shopify, a clean Meta catalogue is the same discipline as a clean Google Shopping feed, and the very same product data does both jobs.

The setup and requirements in this guide are current as of July 2026. Meta renames and restructures its ad products often, so check the latest before you rely on any specific figure.

The quick checklist

  • Connect your store with the Facebook & Instagram by Meta sales channel; your products then sync to your Meta catalogue automatically, and later changes sync within a few minutes.
  • Set a return policy in your Shopify settings. Meta will not approve a shop without one.
  • Assign a Google product category to every product. Meta requires it before it will publish.
  • Only physical, paid products are eligible. Digital items and free products are excluded.
  • Use square images of at least 500 x 500 px, ideally 1024 x 1024 px or larger. The same clean square photos from your Google feed work here.
  • Consider a 4:5 portrait crop too, which Meta favours in mobile placements.
  • Keep the important words in your titles within the first 65 characters (200 is the hard limit), and write full descriptions.
  • Fill in price, availability, condition, brand, and a barcode (GTIN) wherever one exists.
  • Watch the Product Status area in the channel for disapprovals and Commerce Policy issues, and fix them.
  • Remember Meta renamed Advantage+ Shopping to Advantage+ sales; your catalogue is what feeds those campaigns and Meta’s catalogue (dynamic) ads.

Why your Meta catalogue is your ad engine

Meta’s shopping ads do not advertise pages, they advertise products, and every one of those products comes from your catalogue. When a shopper sees a dynamic catalogue ad or an Advantage+ sales campaign surfaces the right item, Meta is pulling the image, price, and details straight from the catalogue you fed it from Shopify. Thin or non-compliant data gives Meta little to show and less to match, so your reach and your results suffer. Worse, a product that fails Meta’s rules is disapproved and simply never appears, which is invisible unless you go looking for it.

The good news is that almost all of this is controlled from your ordinary Shopify product pages and a few store settings. You do not need a developer. You need the catalogue clean and eligible.

How your Shopify products become a Meta catalogue

You connect the two with the Facebook & Instagram by Meta sales channel in Shopify. Once it is set up and your Meta business assets are linked, Shopify syncs your products to Facebook automatically, and any later changes to a product in Shopify sync across on their own, usually within a few minutes. According to Shopify’s own documentation, the data that flows into the Meta catalogue includes each product’s title, description and images, its price and availability, its variants such as size and colour, and its assigned Google product category.

Two ideas are worth holding onto. First, this is one product data set doing two jobs: the same clean records that make a strong Google Shopping feed are what populate your Meta catalogue, so the housekeeping you do once pays off on both. Second, syncing is not the same as being approved. A product can sync to Meta and still be held back because it fails an eligibility rule, which is what the next section is about.

What Meta needs before it will show your products

Per Shopify’s documentation, a product has to clear a short list of requirements before Meta will publish it:

  • It must be a physical product, and it cannot be free. Digital goods and zero-price items are not eligible.
  • Your store needs a return policy, configured in your Shopify settings. Meta will not approve a shop that has none.
  • Every product needs a Google product category assigned in Shopify. This is the single most common blocker for new stores.
  • The product must be made available to the Facebook sales channel in your Shopify admin.
  • Everything must comply with Meta’s Commerce Policy and Community Standards, and with Meta’s product data specifications for titles, descriptions, and images.

If a product is missing any of these, it shows up in the channel’s Product Status area with the reason, and it will not run in ads until you resolve it.

Product images for Meta

Images are the first thing a shopper sees and a common reason products are rejected. The specs below come from Meta’s product data specification for catalogues; the recommended size and mobile crop are best practice on top of Meta’s stated minimums.

SpecRequirementWhy
Minimum size500 x 500 pxBelow this, products can be rejected.
Recommended size1024 x 1024 px or largerSharper across every placement.
Aspect ratio1:1 (square) for the feed; 4:5 (portrait) favoured on mobileSquare is the safe default; portrait fills more of the mobile screen.
FormatJPEG or PNGStandard, widely supported.
File sizeUnder 8 MBLarger files are rejected.
OverlaysNo watermarks, logos, or promotional text over the productMeta rejects cluttered or promotional images.
BackgroundPlain, uncluttered (white is safest)Clean product shots convert and approve better.

Because Meta accepts and prefers square images, the same 2,048 x 2,048 px square photos you prepared for your Google feed work here without any extra effort. If you want to get the most from mobile placements, add a 4:5 portrait crop as well, but a clean square image is a solid baseline everywhere.

The product fields Meta uses

Fill these in for every product. The table maps each Shopify field to what it becomes in your Meta catalogue and why it matters. The character limits below are from Meta’s product data specification for catalogues.

Shopify fieldMeta catalogue fieldNotes
TitletitleUp to 200 characters, but keep the key information within the first 65 so it is not cut off. Lead with brand and product.
DescriptiondescriptionUp to 9,999 characters. Write a genuine, detailed description in plain text, with no links or ALL CAPS.
Media (images)image_linkSee the image specs above. The first image does the heavy lifting.
PricepriceMust match your store, with the correct currency.
Compare-at pricesale_priceLets Meta show a genuine sale price correctly.
Inventory / availabilityavailabilityin stock or out of stock. Out-of-stock items are not shown in ads. Keep it accurate.
VendorbrandMeta treats Vendor as the brand. Set it to the real brand for every product.
Barcode (GTIN)gtinOptional. Add the manufacturer barcode where one exists to help Meta classify and match your product, and only provide one you are sure is correct.
Variants / Optionsvariant grouping, color, sizeSet clear colour and size options so variants map cleanly.
Product categorygoogle_product_categoryRequired by Meta before a product will publish. Assign it in Shopify.
Conditionconditionnew, refurbished, or used. Defaults to new.
Status and channel availabilityeligibilityThe product must be active and made available to the Facebook channel.

Common catalogue errors this prevents

Doing the above heads off the problems that most often stop Shopify products from running on Meta:

  • Missing Google product category, which blocks publishing entirely.
  • No return policy set, which stops the whole shop being approved.
  • Commerce Policy or Community Standards violations, which disapprove individual products.
  • Images that are too small or carry promotional overlays, which are rejected.
  • Price or availability that does not match your store, which causes mismatches and disapprovals.

A quick note on Advantage+ naming

If the terminology looks like it has shifted, it has. Meta renamed Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns to Advantage+ sales campaigns, part of its broader Advantage+ campaign experience. The change rolled out across 2025 and into 2026, and you can no longer create the old Advantage+ Shopping campaign type. The important part for you is that the change does not touch your catalogue: whatever Meta calls the campaign, Advantage+ sales campaigns and Meta’s catalogue (dynamic) ads still draw their products from the same catalogue this guide sets up. Get the catalogue right and you are ready for either.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect my Shopify store to a Meta catalogue?

Install and set up the Facebook & Instagram by Meta sales channel in your Shopify admin and link your Meta business assets. Once connected, your eligible products sync to your Meta catalogue automatically, and later changes sync across within a few minutes.

Does my Shopify catalogue sync to Meta automatically?

Yes. After the channel is set up, Shopify keeps your products in sync with your Meta catalogue on its own, so edits you make in Shopify flow through without a manual export.

What image size does Meta need for catalogue products?

At least 500 x 500 px, with 1024 x 1024 px or larger recommended. Square (1:1) images are the safe default and a 4:5 portrait crop performs well on mobile. Use JPEG or PNG under 8 MB, with no watermarks or promotional text.

Why are my products not showing or getting rejected on Meta?

The usual causes are a missing Google product category, no return policy set in your store, an image or listing that breaks Meta's Commerce Policy, or the product not being made available to the Facebook channel. The channel's Product Status area names the reason for each product so you can fix it.

Do I need a different product feed for Meta than for Google?

No. The same clean, complete product data that makes a strong Google Shopping feed is what populates your Meta catalogue, and the Facebook & Instagram by Meta channel handles the sync for you. Keeping your Shopify product data tidy serves both.

What is the difference between Advantage+ Shopping and Advantage+ sales?

They are the same family of automated campaigns under a new name. Meta renamed Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns to Advantage+ sales campaigns during 2025, and the old name is being retired. Both run on the product catalogue you set up here.

Do I need a barcode (GTIN) for Meta?

A GTIN is optional in Meta's catalogue. Add the manufacturer barcode where one exists, because it helps Meta classify and match your products, and only provide one you are sure is correct. For items with no standard barcode, leave it off.

Can I sell digital products through a Meta catalogue?

No. Meta's catalogue is for physical products, and free products are also excluded. Only physical, paid items are eligible.

Keeping it clean

A Meta catalogue is not a one-off. New products, seasonal ranges, and supplier changes all reintroduce gaps, and Meta’s policies and product statuses shift over time. Set the standard once, apply it to every new product as you add it, and check the Product Status area each time you launch something new. A catalogue that stays clean and fully approved is one your ads can actually work with, every day.
